"I'm going through cancer but I don't feel like I have cancer. The way I look at it, there is so much love that the community has pushed it out."

Olivia Carey, first AAB recipient

It takes an island.

Arms Around Bainbridge began in 2007 with seven friends, a thirty mile swim around Bainbridge Island and one goal: To provide financial and emotional support to a friend as she battled ovarian cancer.

Today, that initial fundraising swim by a few hearty souls has grown to include support from hundreds of individuals, local businesses and the philanthropic community.

Our mission is to provide financial and emotional support to island residents facing financial crisis as a result of illness.

Our island community, although unique in many ways, is like all others, where individuals and families can find themselves in a financial emergency as a result of a catastrophic illness.

Arms Around Bainbridge acts as a bridge for recipients as they work towards long-term stability.

Our Organization

To date we have disbursed over $1 million to our neighbors who are caught in financial crisis as a result of serious illness. We raise funds through a variety of events, including a round-the-island relay that has featured bicyclists, rowers, walkers and swimmers. Our goal is to build an endowment with which we can fund our recipients’ monthly needs, thereby ensuring support for island residents so they can focus on healing.
